Video: #FollowFriday Todd Bishop & The X Conference

I was introduced to church planter Todd Bishop in May 2008. Todd serves as lead pastor of Point Community Church in Westbury, NY. Since meeting Todd, I’ve been challenged by his passion and vision for church planting, Long Island, and the Church.

On May 20, 2010, Todd and Point Community are sponsoring The X Conference, an exciting one day event for church leaders. Presenters include Mark Batterson, Nelson Searcy, Buddy Cremeans, and others; all for an early bird rate of ONLY $59.00! Here’s my Follow Friday interview with Todd about The X Conference.

Please follow The X Conference, Todd, and Point Community Church on Twitter.

Laundry Love Project Comes To Santa Ana

Last week I had the privilege of speaking with Soctt Overpeck who is part of a coalition of nonprofits, churches, social entrepreneurs, businesspeople, artists and dreamers, who are joined together by a desire to listen to the needs of Santa Ana and respond accordingly. This Thursday, September 17, they launch Laundry Love Project Santa Ana.

Here is a transcript of our conversation.

Josh: Scott, thanks for agreeing to share with us about what’s going on in Santa Ana. For those who are not familiar with Laundry Love Projects (LLPs), please share a little about them. What are LLPs?

Scott: Absolutely, and thank you Josh for asking me to speak about this exciting opportunity. LLPs are regular opportunities to help people who are struggling financially by assisting them with doing their laundry. LLPs partner with local laundromats in cleaning clothes of those living in shelters, motels, cars, garages and on the streets. Relationships are built, and LLPs become small communities of common concern in which participants often find that they receive assistance and benefit with other areas of their lives.

    Josh: Awesome!

Scott: Yes, it’s a great idea. As matter of fact, LLPs are an open source idea/project of JustOne. JustOne is a non-profit organization that was formed to stimulate greater global awareness about extreme poverty, and to provoke compassionate ideas and intelligent giving in order to provide sustainable relief. By keeping LLPs open source, JustOne is able to assist others to start localized efforts throughout the US.

Josh: So why start a LLP in Santa Ana? Isn’t Orange County a pretty affluent area?

Scott: That’s a great question Josh. Most people don’t know this, but the Los Angeles Times ranked Santa Ana as number one in the nation for “urban hardship” and “the nation’s toughest place to survive.”

Santa Ana has the highest density of apartment dwellings in the United States, with over 50% of the inhabitants being minorities living at or below the poverty level. 14% of all families and 31% of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level (as compared to the 6% of all families living below the poverty level in all of Orange County).

These and similar statistics are the reason we are choosing Santa Ana for the next LLP. Above all, the laundromat as community development center concept is a chance to do laundry and share life.

Josh: How can people and organizations get involved?

Scott: One of our more obvious needs we have is quarters. We can’t do laundry without quarters! Additionally, we need volunteers. If any of your readers live in or near Santa Ana we could use your help. We need volunteers in a variety of areas: greeters, kids workers, crossing guards, administrative types, etc. We are especially in need of bi-lingual English/Spanish volunteers.

Josh: And what about those of us who live outside of the OC? How can we help LLP Santa Ana?

Scott: Donations are one way. All donations made to Laundry Love Project Santa Ana are tax deductible. We also need help getting the word out to potential investors and partners. If any of your readers have contacts in or work for the press, they can contact me directly. We’re additionally seeking out partners who would want to financially invest in LLP Santa Ana.

Josh: Great! You heard it people, get the word out there. How can people contact you and LLP Santa Ana?

Scott: Well, there’s the website, ning, twitter, email, or by phone (949-682-9344).

Josh: Anything else you’d like to share before you go?

Scott: The biggest thing we’re aiming for with LLP Santa Ana is collaboration; collaboration with people who are willing to put in an effort and not be concerned about who gets the credit. We’re looking for people coming together for the betterment of Santa Ana.
